Model answer
One major challenge that elderly individuals often encounter is social isolation. As people age, they may lose contact with friends and family due to relocation or death, which can lead to loneliness and depression. Additionally, many older adults face financial insecurity, especially if they have inadequate pensions or savings, forcing them to rely on state support or family. Health issues are another significant hurdle; chronic conditions like arthritis, heart disease, and dementia require ongoing medical attention and can limit mobility. Moreover, ageism in the workplace makes it difficult for seniors who wish to continue working to find employment, often pushing them into early retirement against their will. These challenges are compounded by a lack of age-friendly infrastructure, such as accessible public transport and housing. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach, including community programs to combat isolation, financial planning education, improved healthcare services, and anti-discrimination laws to protect older workers.
